ABOUT JULIE A. SACKS
Julie advocates for clients’ civil rights, in practice areas that include employment discrimination, Title IX, and academic disciplinary matters. With a background as a management-side labor and employment law attorney, Julie has defended numerous private and public sector employers against claims of employment discrimination brought under Title VII. Julie’s experience also includes counseling employers on compliance with applicable federal and state laws in their day-to-day personnel administration.
Before joining Nesenoff & Miltenberg, Julie worked as an associate at an Am Law 100 labor and employment law firm where she represented employers in traditional labor and employment matters. Julie has worked as an attorney in both the private and public sectors. As a former government attorney, Julie served as an advocate in a variety of administrative proceedings, including employee discipline and discharge cases and professional disciplinary proceedings against licensed healthcare professionals.
Notable Work
Labor and Employment:
- Defended public and private employers in administrative charges of race, age, and sex discrimination before administrative agencies and courts.
- Represented public and private employers in labor grievance arbitrations, including contract cases and disciplinary cases involving allegations of welfare fraud, patient abuse, and other serious misconduct.
- Defended public and private employers in unfair labor practice charges under the National Labor Relations Act and analogous state law.
- Obtained summary judgment on behalf of a prominent communications company in claims of discrimination and alleged violations of the Family Medical Leave Act brought by a former employee, resulting in a complete dismissal of all claims.
- Obtained dismissal for private employer of a former employee’s disability discrimination claim who alleged that her normal post-pregnancy and breastfeeding qualified as a “disability.”
- Obtained summary judgment on behalf of a labor union in a claim that it had breached its duty of fair representation.
- Obtained monetary judgment on behalf of a labor union against a construction company that failed to remit union dues and make contributions to multi-employer, joint benefits plans.
Administrative:
- Represented medical school students against allegations of sexual violence and academic misconduct.
- Prosecuted professional disciplinary actions against licensed health care professionals and certified educators charged with unprofessional conduct.
- Represented the school board in cases involving the discharge of tenured public school teachers.
- Has served as a neutral administrative hearing officer in administrative matters, including public education matters.
Internal Investigations:
- Lead investigator into internal inquiry by a state agency into allegations of regulatory non-compliance and violations of the state whistleblower law.
- Conducted internal investigations of alleged employee misconduct and negotiated separation agreements.
